The story of Anthony Ray Hinton is the tragic story of life for a black man in Alabama. With a solid alibi and no proof, he is convicted of capital murder and spent 30 years on death row in Alabama. The significant point is that this did not happen in 1885 or 1905 but in 1985. His lawyer was terrible, the judge is convinced he is guilty before the trial started and the all-white jury saw a black man on trial and dead white people and convicted him. But Hinton’s story is a story of hope and renewal. He never gave up hope. It is also the story of friendship. His friend Lester stuck with him through thick and thin. He visited him every week and gave him money for the commissary. The story of that friendship is worth the read. This is not a cheerful story. It is in fact very depressing. But the reader knows that there is hope at the end. This is an inspiring story of love, faith, and a belief that the sun does shine. In the end, this is Anthony Ray Hinton’s story. And it is beautifully and simply told by Anthony and Lara Love Hardin. It is, however, a story about us. We are the context. Anthony Ray and the people around him simply shine a light inside the institution that we live within. But it’s up to us to open our eyes and see. “The sun does shine.” But you have to open your eyes to see it. And that, ultimately, is the message of this book. The Sun Does Shine is amazing and a must-read.
