Description of Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson ePub

“Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption” is a wonderful and charming book for anybody who is interested and cares about equality, reconciliation, racial and social justice in the United States. Bryan Stevenson is the author of this attractive book. This is a compelling and well-written book. Mr. Stevenson, the founding lawyer of the Equal Justice Initiative, provides a history of key legislation and cultural attitudes, especially across the 20th and 21st centuries, of the current system of justice in the U.S. and its high incarceration rates. The historical information is presented using stories of the many clients he has provided invaluable assistance to over his career, which not only makes the information more interesting but as importantly, provides context and evidence of the actual injustice that results from these laws and attitudes, especially in terms of capital punishment. Whether you are adamantly for or against capital punishment, Mr. Stevenson will provide you with a perspective that the average person lacks and does so using a literary prowess that one may not expect from a defense attorney. The only hard part is at the end, you realize that none of the issues presented are easily solved by anything but baby steps. Reading this book is one of the first steps you, personally, can take in the effort to ensure justice is just. It is easy to think we should be “tough on crime.” Bryan Stevenson writes brilliantly about his own life experiences. He reveals significant flaws in the criminal justice system, especially in the prejudice of the Deep South. He humanizes criminals and shows that “toughness” is not always the most appropriate or best solution.

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

There is one story told in great detail throughout the book, but he expertly weaves in other stories to help the reader grasp the complexity and many angles involved in thinking through this topic. Not only is the book, Just Mercy by Bryan, a significant book of our time, but it is also a well-written, engaging and heartfelt memoir of Stevenson’s legal career helping death row inmates mostly wrongly accused or ill-served by the legal system. The book reads like fiction, if only it were fiction. The reader would like to think that these stories so poignantly spelled out by Stevenson couldn’t be true. But, sadly, they are true and happening in modern society. This book is a “must-read” for all readers. While many of the books pointing out racial inequality in the justice system are prevalent and important, this book gives the heart of the issues from a man who has a big heart and fine-tuned legal skills, Just Mercy is a book of social history. Prisoners, and people accused of crimes, are human beings too and deserve to be treated as such, as Mr. Stevenson explains. This book could change our judicial system if people learn from it and choose to start working on making the necessary changes. It’s a life-changing book.
