Description of The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff ePub
“The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure” is a must-read book for parents to read so they can be better parents and for administrators to read so they can better respond to the current environment be it academics or business. Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt are the authors of this comprehensive book. Jonathon is an excellent author and thinker. With studies, facts, and common sense he breaks down the reason the American Mind has become so coddled and provides practical solutions on how we can raise up a new generation of uncoddled Americans. It is helpful to have someone diagnose the problems with America today, but it is comforting to know that there are brilliant minds like Haidt offering practical and helpful solutions to these problems. If you have been wondering what is happening among younger adults and college students, and if you have been puzzled by their seeming emotional fragility and lack of ability to engage with reasonable discussions, then a helpful book is out and about. Greg, an attorney, New York Times best-selling author, and the President and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), and Jonathan, American social psychologist, Professor of Ethical Leadership at New York University’s Stern School of Business, and author have pulled together an insightful and useful dossier running 352 pages, “The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure”. The hardback came out in September 2018 and is recently reformatted into a softback.
The authors have given a fair-minded, thought-filled analysis that is substantive while being quite readable. Haidt is refreshingly straight forward in The Coddling of the American Mind as he attempts to make sense of a recent phenomenon that is becoming increasingly apparent on many college campuses across the country: the breakdown of discourse in large part due to the epiphenomenon associated with defining danger down in the minds of college students today. Mr. Haidt explores this concept creep of terms like safety in a pragmatic, useful, and fun manner through his background in psychology. He consolidates his analysis to what he terms Three Great Untruths that are told to modern children and extrapolates the impacts of these untruths on development and their ability to decrease resiliency and increase anxiety. A great read that deserves more attention from parents of college students. Finally, in clear, simple terms, this book details the problems that occur when parents overprotect their children. Teaching them to be fearful of the world around them, to always trust those feelings, and to look at the world as made up of good and bad people is a recipe for young people who cannot bear to listen to opposing points of view and to aggressively seek out confirmation bias. Read this and then start letting your children outside for unstructured play without an adult guardian. You might get some skinned knees but it better than having your son or daughter commit suicide when they are teenagers.
