It follows him through his many naturalistic pursuits as he discovers and gathers various plant life and animals from the island’s seashore, sea, woods, and meadows. It describes the interests of his siblings in other pursuits and his mother’s permissive, quiet acceptance of her talented (and often extreme) interests pursued by all four of her children.
The language is exquisite and extremely descriptive of actions and people and life forms the author recounts. Often immersed in funny or sometimes dangerous situations, the ten-year-old Durrell acquires quite a menagerie and an overwhelming collection of life forms in his desire to keep living things he comes across including water snakes, turtle’s geckos, seagulls, and many insects as well as specimens for jar collections or pressed plant life. This book is a must for any reader. Gerald Durrell went from an intense interest in nature to a career in nature, ultimately writing books to support his animal collecting trips, his Jersey Zoo, and his animal foundations. His books, while focused largely on his life, are invariably self-deprecating and filled with delightful descriptions.
