Firas Alkhateeb is the author of this beautiful book. A must-have for every mainstream Muslim in today’s age, or any non-Muslims seeking to understand the Muslim world as it really was. Covers topics from the early days of Islam, overviews of the 4 schools of fiqh, the Shi’a/Sunni split, groups such as the mu’tazilah, the Umayyads and Abbasids, the Berbers and Mamluks, Ottoman empire, Muslim Spain and more. It also has some great printed pictures, which used high-quality paper. The real strength of this book is how comprehensive history is, and how well it is explained to the reader. The writing is very clear, and well-written. It is easy to read both for someone who already has an interest, and will easily lure in anyone with even the mildest interest in Islamic history. The book strikes a good balance between covering all the main parts and not dwelling on the minutiae. All the significant people, places, and events are given due respect and attention.

As a result, we can easily follow the development of Islam since its birth in the 600s until now 1400 years later, spanning territory from Muslim Spain to the Middle East and Africa to India and South East Asia, complete with all the ideological debates, the spiritual struggles, and all the many political frictions and conquering.

Overall “Lost Islamic History” is a good read but could have done with some additional milestones in Islamic history.
