Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage tells the story of the voyage to the Antarctic by Ernest Shackleton and his crew. What these individuals survived during their nearly 18-month ordeal is nothing short of epic. The ultimate loss of their ship, the numbing cold, the sometimes lack food and freshwater, gale-force winds and the ever-present snow/ice as far as the eye could see.
Dealing with these incredibly harsh environmental conditions continually tested these men both physically (often to the point of exhaustion) and mentally, as there were also many days of endless boredom and monotony while waiting for the pack ice to break up. The fact the crew didn’t just give up and die at the hopelessness of their situation is a credit in large part to their leader Ernest Shackleton. While not all his decisions were the best, his steadfast resolve to get his men out alive and back to safety never wavered? A really great book to read.
