This book is a wonderfully engaging story with historical insights into depression era issues. Whitney Monroe has a successful restaurant business in Michigan. So successful that she and her cousin have decided to open a new location. Unfortunately, the local business owner’s don’t take kindly to competition and have been working with the local contractors and code officials to make sure that it never opens. Out of the blue, Whitney gets a call that her stepfather has fallen in the bathroom of his residence and was on the floor for four days before somebody found him.

She has never been close to him and his kids want nothing to do with him. Her mother wanted her to go through her grandmother’s things at the hotel in Manteo, North Carolina before she died, so Whitney decides to go check on her stepfather and go through the items in the building that she now owns and her stepfather lives. As she relives old memories of items in the hotel, she begins to discover several secrets she never knew. How did her mother and stepfather know each other before she and her dad met? How does a project with Roosevelt’s Federal Workers Program in the 1930s tie into her grandmother’s story? And can the objects in the house from her grandfather Benjamin Benoit is worth enough to the Benoit House Museum to save her restaurant business in Michigan? Overall, once again Lisa Wingate spins a wonderful story that only is delightful to read but filled with interesting information. So well researched.
