Description of The Residence by Kate Andersen Brower ePub

“The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House” is a wonderful book about life inside the White House. Kate Andersen Brower is the author of this comprehensive book. The Residence is an informative and well-written book. This is a beautiful book: inspiring, respectful, and yes, patriotic. The glimpses into history, as well as into the real lives of our first families, provide real insight into the tremendous pressures and responsibilities inherent in occupying the White House. The grace, dignity, and discretion of those who serve the First Family and make the President’s job doable on a daily basis offer lessons for us all. Andersen Brower beautifully unveils all these hidden secrets for us to enjoy and more importantly reminds us that politicians are only human too. Kate Brower’s first book and she has succeeded in writing an enjoyable one. It is as one media reviewer described it; ‘delicious’. Interviews with still living retired house residence employees and some who still work in the White House of their memories and impressions of the First Families from the Kennedys to the Obamas and the pressures at times of their jobs. The priority for the residence employees is loyalty to the institution of the White House, the running of the White House and responding to the needs and requests of the First Families.

George H. W. Bush and his wife Barbara treated the staff very well and as equal people to themselves. Lady Bird Johnson was well-liked too, but they don’t gloss over the reality that her husband Lyndon is demanding and autocratic towards the residence employees as well as to his political aides; most of whom learned quickly that the key to dealing with him is for them to stand their ground and not let him walk all over them. The events of 9/11 and the extent of the panic that ensued in the White House that day of the plane attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, and at the Pentagon not too far from the White House. A few of the employees remember the shock of discovering JFK’s liaisons with women in the family quarters, while his wife Jackie is away. At such times they were told not to go up to the 2nd and 3rd floors. Occasionally, there is a job that needed to be done, and on one occasion, a male employee got a glimpse of a naked woman walking from the family kitchen. That is remembered too. The employees interviewed are not saintly; they are kind and decent and also honest about some negative experiences they had serving the First Families. They heard the big rows between the Clintons and their foul language at such times. Mainly positive memories and some reflections on the human flaws and vulnerabilities of the First Families they worked for. Some of the children of Presidents Johnson, Ford and Carter interviewed about what it was like for them in the White House. Finally, “The Residence” is an amazing book to all who care about how the Presidents and their families lived.
