“The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” is an outstanding book to anyone who seeks, thirsts, and requires knowledge. Michelle Alexander is the author of this wonderful book. Michelle is a perfect author who can take complex and break easily it down to easily understandable information. This is a book that is full of stories and statistics which will make the reader acknowledge that the incarceration of people of color in this country must be addressed. Author Michelle gives a historical record of just how much mass incarceration has been at the heart of disenfranchising black men in this country. From reconstruction, states have found ways to imprison black men on a variety of ridiculous laws like vagrancy. The modern-day statutes are drug laws that have filled the prison system. Alexander explains the problems of policing, drug laws, prison systems, and draconian public assistance statutes that bar ex-felons from the housing which all contribute to the mass incarceration of people of color. She does not mince her words and holds many people accountable from Reagan’s war on drugs to Clinton’s crime bill. She explains Supreme Court case law which almost always favors policing to the problems ex-felons have to get housing and a job even custody of their children.

Absolutely essential reading for anyone who cares about social justice and racial equality in the United States. In this book, Michelle clearly describes how it has come to pass that despite “colorblind” laws, we have developed a society where there is what amounts to a racialized under caste of black and brown people, labeled as “felons” through the War on Drugs and as such subject to completely legal discrimination in housing, employment, federal assistance, and other areas, and often disenfranchised for life. Alexander shows how the war on drugs has resulted in vastly unequal outcomes by race, even though all studies show that whites and people of color use drugs at the same rates. She shows clearly through careful, logical analysis of how this system operates, how it has been inoculated against legal challenges at every level and how the lifelong effects of being caught in this dragnet never end. This book is urgently needed now more than ever. If there is any hope of healing the poisonous legacy of slavery in this country, it is imperative that this system of oppression be understood clearly, and dismantled permanently, without allowing a new version of racial control to spring up in its place. This is an eye-opening book that begs for legislation regarding policing and sentencing and nonprofit assistance to help families that are living with a member who is or has been imprisoned.
