The Midwife's Revolt by Jodi Daynard

Married just a short time to a young man from a wealthy family he goes off to war and leaves her a widow. She refuses the help of his parents and is trying to maintain their small farm while living off her earnings as a midwife and the produce of the farm. Help arrives in a surprise visit from her ex-in-laws who leave her with guests to live with her. Her neighbours and friends are all important people in the revolution and she is drawn into all of its secrets and plots. She becomes so paranoid with her knowledge that she begins to suspect even her roommate of being a spy. In short, it is an interesting view of the American Revolution and the complexities of the characters involved and the hard times the people survived.
