Description of The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt

“The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom” is an insightful book that belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in some of the fundamental problems of living a happy, fulfilled life, and of making a positive contribution to the world. Jonathan Haidt is the author of this perfect book. Professor Haidt has written an excellent book that is as entertaining as it is informative. The Happiness Hypothesis should be required reading for anyone interested in living a more happy and fulfilled life. The book gives a very detailed account of happiness from many different viewpoints. It picks apart old and new aspects of happiness theories and puts them together in a seamless hypothesis. From how happiness is only a chemical reaction within our brain, to how we need to have social connections to achieve greater happiness, the book goes into great detail on many of these conditions for happiness. The book gives good introductions to the topics, supports the hypothesis, and invites thinkers to further the conversation.

The Happiness Hypothesis is an extremely enjoyable book to read. This book is all about different aspects of happiness. The author explains (in a story like a manner) his research into what makes people universally happy (what traits make people happy regardless of culture, race, society, etc.). The author cites relevant studies where appropriate, and gives plenty of background information. Some of the topics discussed in the book are religion, meditation, medicine, cognitive behavioral therapy, cultural studies, and more. This book’s purpose is to essentially explain to the reader what happiness is (in a clinical sense), and which ways you can obtain happiness in your life. If you’re at all interested in happiness (what makes people happy, how to stay happy, etc.), this book will be an incredibly fun read. All in all, this is a good book, a book that one can read straight through and enjoy and also a book that one can chew on the ideas presented, for a long, long time.
