The Forgotten 500 is an accurate, intriguing, and informative book. Another of the ‘forgotten’ stories of WWII, this is a very well written book about an amazing rescue operation of allied (mostly US bomber crews) that had bailed out over mountainous Yugoslavia on their way back from missions attacking the Ploesti oil fields in Romania.

The downed airmen were hidden from the Nazi occupation army by local Yugoslav peasants and partisans at great danger to themselves. The numbers kept increasing until the US finally decided to attempt a rescue, against the better judgment of the British. Several OSS agents were parachuted in to arrange the rescue and prepare an airfield for the recovery. There are several interesting aspects of the book. The historical content of what was happening in Yugoslavia at the time (and after the war), a short history of the beginning s of the OSS, and the personal stories of several of the airmen and the US Army intelligence officer who arranged the rescue (after his escape from Yugoslavia as the Germans invaded early in the war), and then the daring rescue itself are all interesting parts of the book.
