“The Firebird” is a well-researched, beautifully written historical romance. Susanna Kearsley is the author of this attractive book. Another amazing and beautifully written story by Susanna Kearsley. Weaving her characters throughout actual historical events makes the story interesting while informative. Susanna Kearsley draws back into some of her current tales, mentions of locations and characters in her current offerings, reflecting characters and locations in her former book, which is so true of “ The Firebird”. The fact that the author, Susanna Kearsley, used factual historical figures, dates, times and places in the book made it all the more fun to read. Kearsley weaves history with a delicious plot and two charming love stories into a book. Susanna Kearsley has written another page-turner based on well-researched historical facts and real people with the added bonus of re-introducing characters from Shadowy Horses, Robbie who is all grown up and the Morays from Winter Sea. The book incorporates two stories, one from the 18th century and the Jacobites in Russia and one taking place in the present. As usual, Ms. Kearsley skillfully weaves the two stories together and holds the reader’s interest in both timelines. The stories both include romance, intrigue, travel and warm, caring people. Susanna Kearsley’s books are engaging on a number of levels. Her historical fiction is well-researched and educational, while the past and present interpersonal relationships are engrossing.

This novel is fascinating and very well written. It tells the story of Nicola, a woman with psychic gifts – gifts that she doesn’t want to embrace or use. When she touches things she will sometimes be shown flashes of information about the object’s past. Through her work with art and antiques, she meets an older woman whose very future depends on the sale of a valuable antique a carved wooden bird that she says came from Russia’s Empress Catherine. The only problem is, there’s no paperwork or proof that the relic is genuine. Nicola has handled the small wooden bird and seen visions, so she knows it’s for real and takes pity on the woman. She sets out to see if she can use her abilities to find real-world proof which would make the bird valuable in the art world. More than anything else this is a deep and heartfelt look into Nicola’s belief in herself. It is the parallel story of Nicola’s journey and also of that of a small girl growing up in the 18th century, told with a beauty and tenderness which we weeping at times. You know a book is well-written when you’re can’t even close it despite the tears running onto your pillow. The author has done a tremendous job of building the two main female characters, and they are incredibly deep and three-dimensional, leading to great empathy for their difficulties during the book. And it is rare that a work of fiction can bring the learning of history into the plot without distracting the reader or overloading with historical facts. As always, this is a well-written novel with likable characters that deal with time travel, and with parallels between the past and present. Finally, “Firebird” is a beautifully written novel, where the story just flows from the pages and is captivating from the first page to the last. It is clear that Susanna Kearsley was passionate about her characters and her story when she wrote this novel. You can tell that the historical information in this novel, had been very well researched and it is quite interesting.
