Description of Suspicious Minds by Rob Brotherton ePub
“Suspicious Minds” is a brief, a concise book loaded with practical but powerful strategies. The author does a great job of running through the different ways that all Humans are conspiracy theorists and the reasons why some are more so. It is important that we respect each other in our differences along with our similarities regardless of beliefs. Well written and Insightful. The author weaves in the well-established understanding of our brain, from perception psychology to cognitive science to explain why we lend ourselves to conspiracy thinking. It is also entertaining as it touches on many conspiracy theories, although its purpose is to always reflect on the thinking, rather than dwelling on evidence or lack thereof.
The book is entertaining and well-written. However, Brotherton’s central thesis–that conspiracy beliefs are largely caused by an overzealous pattern-seeking brain–is very poorly justified. It takes no account of how conspiracy beliefs wax and wane (e.g.: as Uscinski and Parent have shown) depending on who occupies the seat of political power, or (as Robins and Post have forcefully argued) that political paranoia is a psychological mindset caused, namely, by the fear of losing power and not by a genetic or neurological condition.
Many strong conspiracists lose their paranoid fears when their living conditions improve; this suggests that their predisposition to believing in conspiracy theories is not permanent (i.e.: not primarily neurological), and that it varies in accordance with one’s feelings of loss of control, their social context and personal relationships, the whims of popular opinion and pop culture, their feelings of isolation, etc. Brotherton never speaks about these issues, nor is his brain-focused thesis able to explain the conversion experiences of several “ex-conspiracists”. Read the book and enjoy it. You’ll learn a lot about various conspiracy theories and confirmation bias experiments.
