Description of Stormy Weather by Paulette Jiles PDF

The “Stormy Weather: A Novel (P.S.)” is a beautifully written book set in Texas covering the time period from the 1920s through the beginnings of WWII. Paulette Jiles is the author of this book. The era of the Great Depression is quite fascinating and illustrates the best of American perseverance and character. Paulette Jiles has an amazing way with words. She brings Depression-era North Texas to life in a way those who lived through it can easily relate to. It is an atmospheric saga of family survival amid the oil fields, hardscrabble farmlands and horse tracks of Depression-era Texas. It’s about the Stoddard family Jack Stoddard, a rambling, gambling man, his wife Elizabeth and three daughters, especially the headstrong middle girl, Jeanine. The Stoddard’s have spent years as poverty-stricken itinerants travelling from oil field to oil field where Jack labours, but a dramatic development sends them back to their farm where Jeanine leads their determined efforts to repair the weather-beaten house, the ravaged land and their equally damaged lives.

Stormy Weather by Paulette Jiles

Along the way, there are frightening farm accidents, romances for the daughters, the rude, patronizing ministrations of a public health nurse, lots of neighbourhood gossip, dicey investments in an apparently tapped-out oil field and a feisty horse named Smokey Joe. Dominating this enjoyable story filled with incident are the brutal weather conditions of Dust Bowl Texas. Author Paulette Jiles is a poet, and her descriptions of drought conditions, dust storms and death-inducing static electricity will make you crave a cool glass of water and shelter from the elements.
