The “Silver Sparrow” is a beautiful book, full of provocative thoughts and deep characters. Tayari Jones is the author of this book. The author has the amazing to start a story and engage you with the characters. This third novel by Tayari Jones is set in Atlanta and has two first-person narrators James Witherspoon’s two daughters. For James Witherspoon has two separate families his “outside family” a wife and daughter who live in a house in Southwest Atlanta and his “inside family” a second “wife” and daughter who live in an apartment building, not far, yet not too close to his “outside family.” Dana, his “inside daughter” tells her story first about how James and her mother met, began seeing each other, even though he was already married and how she is a product of their relationship. Because Dana and her mother make up the “inside family” they are constantly reminded of the family with whom James lives, and are forced to make sacrifices to protect his “outside family.”
Then James Witherspoon’s “outside daughter,” Chaurisse tells her family’s side of the story, how her parents got together, were forced to marry, then finally added her to complete the “outside family” unit. The Black community of 1980’s Atlanta is small enough that at different times throughout the novel, members of these two families come into contact with each other, whether deliberately or coincidentally. Tayari Jones’ “Silver Sparrow” illustrates how one man’s selfishness can wreak havoc on the people who love and depend upon him. It is only fitting that the daughters, who attempt to explore the irresistible bond of kinship they share, tell the stories. Indeed, they are the characters who suffer the most in a novel that focuses on Atlanta’s Black middle-class community.
