The “News of the World” is a beautiful story written in flowing, poignant prose about people and events in pioneer Texas in the mid-nineteenth century. Paulette Jiles is the author of this book. It is an emotional relationship between a seventy-two-year-old man, Captain Jefferson Kidd, and a ten-year-old girl is both poignant and charming. Captain Kidd, an elderly gentleman who has lived through and fought in three continental wars by the time this story opens in 1870, spends his days travelling through the Texas countryside reading to audiences the news of the world, which he curates through the reading of dozens of papers both domestic and global. His life, however, suddenly takes a new direction when he ends up agreeing to take a young girl who had been abducted by the Kiowa and then surrendered to the US Army four years later on the long journey “home” to her surviving relatives, an aunt and uncle.

Kidd and the child, Johanna, strike up a cautious friendship as they journey together, a friendship that eventually becomes a much deeper bond over the course of their travels by the time Johanna is set to leave Kidd, she has chosen him as her honorary grandfather. The act of leaving Johanna with taciturn and flinty relatives who seem to have little empathy or interest in allowing the child to become a family member once again, even though they had paid for her return, is difficult and reluctant, and Kidd soon must decide whether to return for her and spirit her away or leave her to her family fate. In short, it is a truly heartbreaking and hopeful book, featuring plenty of action and a chipper plot
