Description of Lifespan by David A. Sinclair

“Lifespan: Why We Age―and Why We Don’t Have To” If you’re interested in the aging process, the research that is going on, and steps you can take to at least age with fewer problems, this is a must-read. Read the whole book in one sitting. David A. Sinclair Ph.D. and Matthew D. LaPlante are the authors of this classic book. An incredible book that highlights there is so much we can do to live longer and healthier lives. It also shows the current disconnect between the research field and practitioners. Dr. Sinclair did a wonderful job summing up his work, past, and present into a well-written book. His writing style is easy and flows well from paragraph to paragraph. Beautifully written with practical personal explanations of what this superstar researcher does to increase his own longevity. A must-read for those of us interested in the latest science. There are surprising breakthroughs in longevity. This book is a useful resource for learning about them. Lifespan is accessible written and insanely informative. A very well written thought-provoking book. Sinclair does an excellent job of explaining the background to his science before moving onto the state-of-the-art.

This is one of those books where the subject matter has the potential to change how we all view deeply ingrained ways of thinking about certain topics – in this case, how we think about aging and disease, as a culture. In particular, aging may no longer need to be viewed as an inevitable one-way path that ultimately leads to a demise quite often characterized by some long-term disease-ridden state. David’s book will give you a look into a possible future (which is already in the works) where aging itself can be treated like a disease and potentially even reversed by decades, perhaps repeatedly. This is also likely to be the ultimate solution to the seemingly losing battle we have been fighting for decades with the leading age-related diseases of the day cancer, heart disease, diabetes, neurological disease, etc. David provides the biological mechanisms that may be common to all these and offers a look into some of the potential treatments and solutions that could greatly delay and even diminish the occurrence of these diseases while extending the human lifespan itself. You may have heard David talk about all this on a podcast and walked away thinking it sounded too good to be true and just too tough to believe. Well, the book lays out quite the groundwork of lab-based evidence already beginning to establish the ideas behind these new revolutionary scientific theories on aging. There are even a few practical applications that have already been achieved in the lab.

Although the book is split into three sections – the past, the present, and the future it reads as two halves: what is essentially scientific and what is decidedly ethical. When Dr. Sinclair confines himself to his subject, it very difficult to put the book down. He discusses the advances in genomics, etc, that led him and others to studying aging, before discussing current research and the notion that aging is more a disease than a natural process. He includes some scientific detail, a few useful analogies and a good smattering of anecdotes to impress and educate the reader, which, despite some obvious padding, he undeniably does. Dr. Sinclair knows there will be serious repercussions, an increase in population, a greater demand for resources, more pollution, more carbon emissions, etc, etc. He says that alongside the big increase in population in the 1800’s was a huge increase in the standard of sanitation and health as though it were causative more people lead to more benefits. He thinks that GMO and foods modified by other technologies will provide the solution to feeding the ever-increasing numbers of mouths and gets irritated when some people have the temerity to question their safety. Also, because he would be content to work doing his interesting research in his lab for the next 50 years, it does not mean a miner would like to spend another 50 digging coal. Despite Dr. Sinclair’s faith in the ingenuity of man, there are times when sense he is trying to convince himself of his utopian vision rather than the reader. Living to infinity is not the be-all and end-all; living a healthy life is more important, whether one lives to 70 or 90. As the Wright Bros were the break through in flight, this is the beginning of the break through in anti aging. The book is heavy in science but has a lot of actionable information. Folks can now very much take charge of slowing aging and making huge improvements in the quality and length of their life. David Sinclair has given us a wonderful gift. A must read.
