Adair Colley is one of the refugees left in the wake of north against south in its American civil war. Adair meets another, soon to be lost soul, a Federal Officer whose job is to interview alleged enemies and spies, a job he comes to loathe.

In that encounter with prisoner Adair, the two fall in love. Although the book is a war story, it is actually about what happens to people in war times. The title, too, is somewhat deceptive. “Enemy Women” suggests the book is primarily about women — although the protagonist is female, the main characters are often men, evil as well as humane. This is not an easy book to read for it’s the story of great depravity, the conflict of man vs. man and the awful things people do to one another. But, in its humanity, the innocence and purity of Adair and her promised love, Major Neumann, the book will touch your heart with their undeserved plights. In short, Enemy Women is a fantastic novel.
