Description of Dreamland by Sam Quinones ePub
“Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic” is a fascinating, enlightening, brilliantly written perspective into this country’s opiate epidemic. Sam Quinones is the author of this wonderful book. Sam is an extremely talented writer and provides his material in a funny and refreshing manner that causes you to want to turn the page and continue learning. This book is heartbreaking, a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the opioid addiction in this country, how and why it happened. If you are a volunteer or professional working to fight opioid addiction, if you are an average American trying to educate your elected representatives, if you are the parent of an addict, the sibling of a drug addict, the spouse, another family member, or friend of a drug addict, this book contains vital information you need to know if you are involved in your loved one’s recovery, including the danger of using addictive drugs to fight drug addiction. “Dreamland” is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in understanding the history behind the current opioid crisis. Quinones’s writing style is very easy to read. The book reads like a novel but is filled with amazing detail and historically accurate facts. The book takes us back and forth between the landscape of drug trafficking in the US and the small Mexican towns from which the drug dealers originate.
The economics of the heroin trade is analyzed in detail showing evidence of a completely new way of dealing drugs that emanates from a desire of small-town Mexican farm boys to make it big in the US. Due to the seemingly infinite number of individuals willing to come to the US, dealers can be quickly and easily replaced, moved or sent home. This new drug trade is centered on customer service tactics rather than systemic violence. Quinones also takes a look at the history of prescription opiate use in the US, starting with the introduction of pain as a vital sign and the aggressive marketing of opioid painkillers to doctors. This book is wonderfully written and provides a broad perspective to help the reader understand how we got to where we are today in regard to opioid abuse in the US. All in all, “Dreamland” is a wonderful and accurate description of America’s current opioid crisis. Quinones weaves together an intriguing, journalistic, narrative of the facts and events that led to the worst drug problem our country has ever faced. As someone who has firsthand experience with this epidemic, we can relate to the message that is being portrayed. And one thing that Quinones does very well give us an unbiased account. There is no finger-pointing, no blame game here. Instead, he thoroughly describes the different circumstances, decisions, and events that led to this crisis.
