Description of The Color of Lightning by Paulette Jiles PDF

“The Color of Lightning: A Novel (P.S.)” is a story about former slaves who attempt to make lives for themselves on the unforgiving southern prairie with hostile Indians, drought, and few resources to deal with. Paulette Jiles is the author of this book. It is a really well-done novel based on actual people and events of the 1860s and ’70s in North Texas and Oklahoma. The Color of Lightning takes place in the High Plains Desert and the Texas Hill Country just at and after the end of the Civil War. Southerners were moving on, out of the chaos of reconstruction, families reunited were looking for a place to start over. This book follows the travels and travails of two families, a radically religious man, Moses Johnson, and his family, and the family of his slave, Brett Johnson.  As with her other novels of northwest Texas, Paulette Jiles bases characters on real people who braved the hardships of the Wild West during and after the Civil War. The main characters are Britt Johnson and his family who make the long trip as freed slaves from Kentucky to northwest Texas.

The Color of Lightning by Paulette Jiles

This is a story of survival beyond measure and loss beyond redemption poverty, violence, death, and capture by savage Indians, repatriation, and re-acculturation or not. Several characters like Samuel Hammond, the Quaker minister sent to oversee the Indian Bureau and Elizabeth Fitzgerald, a white woman saved after years of capture and slavery by the Kiowa-Comanche, pique the reader’s interest, but their stories are left unresolved. Despite these loose ends, the novel is well worth the read to remind us of the grit, heroism, and relationships of western settlers and our earliest countrymen, the First Nations People.
