“Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” is a fascinating memoir by a great writer with an interesting story who looks inward very successfully. J. D. Vance is the author of this amazing and wonderful book.J.D Vance has written an inspiring memoir, reminding us that Hillbilly Lives Matter. Vance sheds a bright and truth-telling light on the white underclass as they existed at the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st. The stories told in Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, will be familiar to anyone who has lived in a lower-middle-class neighbourhood in a rustbelt community – domestic violence, daily drug use and alcohol consumption, multiple marriages, revolving door boyfriends, teenage pregnancies, troublesome attitudes about work and education and perhaps most devastatingly, 24/7 cynicism. Vance’s people do live lives of not so quiet desperation. These social ills are not confined to southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky. The more ambitious members of J.D. Vance’s extended Scots-Irish hillbilly family migrated west back in the day, stopping to populate large portions of Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas. Some made it as far as the west coast, finding lucrative employment in the wartime and natural resources industries.

These “living wage” jobs would not last forever, would not grow at the same rate as the people who made their living harvesting timber, toiling on aircraft assembly lines, patrolling penitentiary tiers. Sadly, many were left behind as natural resources industries and the domestic manufacturing sector declined. Corrections remain a growth industry, however, the inmate rosters and employee rolls for the county jails and state penitentiaries in and around Salem, Oregon is, to paraphrase the late Hunter S. Thompson, “living monuments to the breed.” Vance pulls no punches when it concerns his own immediate family. His maternal grandmother (Mamaw) may be a loving surrogate mom to her doting grandson but he does not sugar coat her attitudes and public deportment, her profane language, attitudes about authority figures and public dress border on textbook trailer trash behaviour. The downward mobility story of his biological mother is tragic and gut-wrenching to read, high school honour student, a checkered career as a Registered Nurse, addict. The book per se may pass quietly into literary history. However, the plight of J.D. Vance’s extended hillbilly family merits serious public policy discussion and not just campaign speech lip service. It’s a book that inspires while being unsentimental and complex.
