Matthew Desmond has given us a treasure of real research on what evictions are doing to people and to the soul of our nation.

He weaves the heart-wrenching stories of several people through the book, detailing their troubles, trials, and evictions. Every Pastor should read this book. We say that, because those of us who proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, should also remember that the pains of poverty are neither simple nor undefeatable. To be sure, we must care for the spiritual needs of all people, but we should also care about, and do what we can to care for, the physical needs, as well, starting with decent housing. Desmond offers some public policy suggestions in the book, especially in the epilogue. Some of these may be considered too radical for some people, but at the very least, they should serve to spur a wider and deeper discussion.
