“David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants” is a good thought-provoking book about how we view disadvantages in our lives, especially from childhood. Malcolm Gladwell is the author of this impressive book. Gladwell is a great thinker and writer, which makes it even more fun to argue with him. A classic Malcolm Gladwell book: impactful thesis supported with interesting anecdotes. It starts out with the story of David and Goliath from the bible, he goes on to tell about what Davids skills were back then what Goliath’s skills back then would have been and clearly pointed out that David would always have had the upper hand. It was so interesting to look at battles, like this battle between David and Goliath and about the Arab revolt against the Turkish army. It was interesting to read what he wrote about those battles because we all would have all thought the same thing “the bigger would win”. Gladwell asks us to look differently at battles, look at how we can use our disadvantages as our advantages. He challenges our preconceived notions on who actually is the underdog. The misfits, he spoke about those who in society would be considered misfits. The people who have lost a parent at an early age and those that have dyslexia. Again, we are socialized to believe that any “handicap” makes you an automatic misfit and what place in society can you possibly play? Well, Gladwell dug deep into this kind of thinking, he wrote about how so many people with dyslexia have grown up from their disadvantage and created with it a strong advantage. It was incredible to read about the number of people who were born with dyslexia became very successful in life because they have had to have an extra struggle that the rest of us didn’t.

He tells the story of Emil “Jay” Freireich and all of the amazing medical advances he brought to childhood leukemia. When Jay was a child, his father died and his mother was not around very much to create a healthy bond with him. So, because of this lack of boding, he was able to push through boundaries that most of us could not do to find answers to childhood leukemia. Overall, this book is well worth reading as it can change your thinking for the better. Advantages have disadvantages, but disadvantages present the opportunity to discover new-found advantages. This is a positive message to put any underdog on top in all kinds of negative circumstances. Everyone faces giants in life. Like Goliath, those giants call us out to battle with them on their terms, but we don’t have to meet those giants on their terms. Normally when we do, we lose. Rather, we can find strengths in the greatest of weaknesses, and opportunities in all kinds of situations that turn disadvantages upside-down.
